News For the Week of January 14, 2015

Winter is here with a blast! Last Sunday got pretty icy in some spots. Several people slid off the road or wrecked their vehicles driving on the roads. The state and county road crews were out working on the roads but it was icing over faster than they could get it treated. School was canceled for Monday along with several other schools in the area which I always think is a good idea. I remember one year it was right on the edge of rain or ice and it turned to ice right about the time school started. One of the school kids slid off the road near our house and we thought the young man was badly injured. The lifeline helicopter couldn't fly because of the ice and the ambulance had a horrible time getting here. The old saying “better to be safe than sorry” is also a very true statement. There is always time for school when the weather is better.

Keep Nona Norwine and her family in your prayers as this dear lady is still in the hospital. She is improving but still needs prayers for a complete recovery. Nona was my eighth grade teacher. She retired a year or so ago but has been an educator for most of her life and has taught several hundred if not thousands of Bradleyville school children in her career.

Well, I got a ballgame time in wrong last week but will try again. On Thursday, January 15 the girls will play Forsyth, at Forsyth. On Friday, January 16 the boys will travel to Mansfield for a ballgame. The next week, January 19-24 will be the Mark Twain Conference Tournament but I don't know where it is being held this year at this time.

The PeeWees have games on Tuesday, January 13 and Thursday, January 15 but that is all the information I have on them. To check location and times and for more information, please call the school at 796-2288.

Homecoming will be on January 30 this year. The boys and girls will both play Hurley, at Bradleyville of course, and games will start at 5:00 pm.

Please feel free to contact me by phone at 796-2651 or by e-mail at karencase.55@gmail.com and let me know your birthdays, anniversaries or some news you would like in the paper.

News For the Week of January 7, 2015

There were snow flurries here most of the day Sunday and I really do enjoy watching it snow, as long as it doesn't pile up. Only two and a half months until spring. Seems like the blink of an eye anymore. I used to dread winter so much and it is still my least favorite season but the older I get the faster time seems to pass so I won't gripe about it so much.

We had a wonderful Christmas celebration and gathering of our family and friends and hope you did too. I haven't taken my decorations down yet. I used to wait until school started up and the kids went back to school but now I don't have any kids in school and my little grandbabies like it so no telling when I'll put it all away!

Lindsay Marsh had a wonderful birthday surprise last week. She came out of a student teacher meeting at C of O and there in the parking lot waiting for her was a new car! She was very happy and thankful her parents got her a car. Lindsay's birthday was last Sunday and she turned twenty two.

Boys basketball will be in the Seymour Tournament this week and the girls will be playing in the Sparta Tournament. Next week the boys and girls will be playing New Covenant Academy in Springfield on Monday, January 12, then the girls only will play Forsyth, home at Bradleyville on Thursday, January 15. The boys will play Bakersfield at home on Tuesday, January 13.

Day, Venessa Mills, Gale Osburn, Carolyn Wakeley; January 10: Vicki Newlyn; January 11: Greg Blair, Bill Dalton, Peggy Krause; January 12: David Boyd, Martie Boyd, Denise Flanigan, Everett Sartin; January 14: Kaitlyn Hunsaker, Corey Ridings.

News For the Week of December 17, 2014

The weather these past few days has been so nice to finish Christmas shopping compared to last year's snow and ice and whatever combination dropped out of the sky. I am finishing my shopping but also just starting. I am a world class procrastinator and although I know I have to get it done I still put it off until the last minute it seems.

The Christmas program at New Mansion Church last Sunday night was very well attended. Bob and I certainly enjoyed watching all the three year old and younger participants as they enjoyed being in the program. Of course it was extremely difficult for them to stay in the place they were supposed to be in and that is what was so enjoyable to watch. It reminded me of a song I used to hear on the radio by Squire Parsons about Christmas in a little country church. It sure fits.

Last Thursday the students of Bradleyville, Plainview, Taneyville and Mark Twain Schools gathered in the gym of Bradleyville School and were provided new shoes from the Slusher Foundation. It looked like a very exciting time in the pictures I saw.

The last ballgame this year before Christmas break will be with Sparta, at Bradleyville on Thursday, December 18, starting at 5:00 in the afternoon. Both the girls and boys will play. The teams won't play again until after school starts back up in January.

Birthdays for the coming week include: December 17: Marge Combs, Sierra Rentfro; December 18: Donna Newman, Katie Reece, Kenyon Whittaker; December 19: Alva Johnson, Kenneth Sims, Maxine Mason; December 20: Jessi Laughlin, Melissa McCleary, Jarell Yeary; December 24: Dakota Isaacs, Pauline Lee, Kim Pollard.

Anniversaries for the coming week include: December 19: Bob and Sue Birdsong, Kenton and Linda Wiggins; December 23: Mike and Vicky Blair; December 24: Bob and Karen Case.

News For the Week of December 3, 2014

We got lots of Christmas lights put up in the warm beautiful weather on Saturday and Sunday, just in time for sleet and ice on Monday. It was nice to have the warm weather to decorate and we could actually feel our fingers this year compared to a few years in the past when the wind was blowing and it was freezing. It has to come this time of year but I sure do dread it. One nice thing about getting older it seems like winter goes past a lot faster than it did when I was young. Then it seemed like years between Thanksgiving and Christmas and now it seems like a blink of the eye.

Our Thanksgiving Day was wonderful. Lots of family and friends and fun times. Lots of food, probably too much but it sure was good. On the other hand, it turned into a not so good day for our grandson, Hayden. Hayden was injured in a freak accident on the last Saturday of deer season while cleaning a deer and the hide gave way all at once, the knife slipped and stabbed him in the abdomen. His parents took him to the ER and he got stitched up but a large hematoma formed and got infected and was also pushing on his insides and he was in a lot of pain. So he tried to enjoy Thanksgiving Dinner with the family but his mom could tell he was in pain and by the time they got home he was in a lot more pain and the decision was made to go back to the hospital. He was admitted and started on IV antibiotics every four hours. He finally got to come back home on Sunday afternoon and is feeling better but still can't go back to school for awhile or play basketball. Of course we don't care about the school or basketball just as long as he heals the way he should.

The Bradleyville Invitational Tournament is going on at Bradleyville School this week. The games started on Monday and continues on Thursday and Saturday. Ballgames next week are the boys at Galena on Tuesday, December 9 and the girls have a game at home with Bakersfield on Thursday, December 11.

New Mansion Church will have a Christmas program on Sunday, December 14 starting at 6:00. I'm sure there is a wonderful time planned for all.

Birthdays for the coming week include: December 4: Bill Johnson, Jacklyn Clemans; December 5: Kyle Laughlin, Joshua Strahan; December 6: Staci Burton, Paitin Combs, Kelli Johnson, Amy Mills, Erin Wyman; December 7: Ellie Combs, Seth Combs; December 8: Michael Howie, Tracy Sherrow; December 9: Sara Blair, Tom Burkhart, Bill Box; December 10: Hannah Blair, Donna Horner.

Anniversaries for the coming week include: December 5: Bill and Rita Box; December 9: Randy and Connie Haes; December 10: Hi and Doris Lambeth.

News For the Week of November 26, 2014

Lots of deer have been harvested in our area and it seems like a large portion of them have been big bucks. Bob got a ten point buck, and the sons-in-law and grandsons got good bucks also. I'm not going to mention how many points on each one because I know I'd get some wrong.

Sympathy goes out to the family of Ernest Combs who passed away last week. Ernest's funeral was Monday at Hercules with burial in Patterson Cemetery. He was very well known and a very proud WWII veteran and was able to go on an honor flight a few years ago with his son, Boyd. Everybody remembers Ernest playing his instruments and making some good music or just visiting with him.

Sympathy also goes out to Vicki Rogers and the rest of the family of Bud Rogers who passed away on the 21st. Bud was a very friendly and well liked person and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

The New Mansion Deer Hunter Chili Feed was very well attended for both past two Saturdays and all the donations were greatly appreciated.

The Bradleyville Invitational Tournament will be next week, December 1-6. On Monday, December 1 the Bradleyville girls will play Ava Victory girls at 7:00. The boys will play the Riverview boys team at 8:15. There will also be games on Thursday and Saturday. Other teams in the tournament include the Forsyth girls, Chadwick boys and St. Joe, AR girls and boys.

Birthdays for the coming week include: November 28: Greg Potter, Bob Siler; November 29: Amanda Swift; November 30: Anita Dalton, Pete Knight, Leeza Wood; December 1: Gratt Dalton, Brandon Newlyn; December 2: Tyler Paul; December 3: Bryce Beeler.

Anniversaries for the coming week include: November 27: Kirk and Tammy Baird; December 2: Eric and Sherry Guerin.
