News For the Week of August 29, 2012

Thankful again for the good rain showers we have been getting. Would love a lot more rain, but of course will take what we get. The fields and yards are looking a lot better, and a lot greener.

I am in charge of mowing the Bradleyville Cemetery and it sure needs mowing right now. I didn’t mow all summer because it didn’t need it and I was also afraid of setting something on fire, but it has grown up pretty high now. I have planned to mow it for three weeks but it either rains a little on it and makes it too wet, or I have other things I have to get done.

Keep remembering Justin and Nikki Combs and their family in your prayers. Justin is now in therapy in Mt. Vernon. Seth, Paitin and Liddy only get to visit their dad on the weekends for a few hours which is hard on all of them. We are hoping and praying for a full recovery for Justin.

Scott Lawson’s dad, Ivan is back home between jobs, so Scott, Julie and Garrett have been getting to see a lot of him while he is here. Last Saturday night they went bowling with Ivan and the rest of the family in Mtn. Grove and had a good time.

Juanita Shortt had company Sunday when her granddaughter, Anita Wiles and family came down to visit and brought dinner to eat with her. That evening, Juanita visited her granddaughter Lynn Case and had supper with Lynn and her family.

Lois Lux and Kathy Compton have been going almost every night and enjoying the concerts at the Southern Gospel Picnic at Silver Dollar City. Lois said there had been big crowds even through the rain that fell a few nights.

Sorry I didn’t get anything sent to the paper last week; I guess I need a course on time management.

My hummingbirds have been swarming in extra large numbers and I wondered if maybe they were getting tanked up to leave for the season. It seems like everything this year has been a month ahead of where it usually is, but a friend told me she had heard on the news that because of the dry conditions this summer there wasn’t as many food sources for the hummers this year, so that may be why they are so plentiful all of a sudden. I’ve also heard before that it is all the new hummers that have hatched out this season. Either way, I have trouble keeping enough sugar for the little dive bombers.

We are so thankful for the good rains we have received lately, and hope they continue. We got close to two inches of rain last week. I actually had to mow the yard, for only the third time this summer.

Kevin Newlyn should be getting to come home from St. Louis this week where he has been hospitalized for a few weeks to have a mechanical heart pump implanted. Our prayers are with Kevin for a fast recovery.

School has started and I would like to remind everyone to be aware of the bus stops. Our bus stop is right in the middle of a blind curve and I can’t count how many times I have heard screeching brakes over the years. Even with all the signs and orange flags it seems that people don’t notice them.

High school volleyball and Junior High basketball will begin soon, with the first volleyball game at home on Tuesday, August 28 with Galena, and another game on the 31st at Fordland.  The first Junior High game will be on Thursday, August 30 at Plainview.

Birthdays for the coming week include: August 23: Emily Todd, Sissy Essary; August 24: Jeff Marsh, Hunter O’Neal; August 25: Heath Dalton, Janessa Hall, McKenna Hunsaker; August 26: Nancy Howie; August 28: Vicki Burkhart.

News For the Week of August 6, 2012

We are so thankful for the good rains we received the past week. We got over 3 inches of rain here and it was wonderful. I couldn’t stop from standing at the window or in the open door and just watching the rain fall. Now I won’t have to drag the garden hose around to water for a few days. My flowers and tomatoes are already looking better in appreciation.

Along with the rain, several of our neighbors had some damage from high winds Saturday evening. Jason and Alicia Crouch had several large limbs broken and some shingle damage, Lynn Case had a large limb blown onto her porch step and across the road from her house, Jim Ironside and the Horners had several limbs down and shingle damage also. Helen Maggard’s pretty Bradford pear tree beside her driveway was broken in two.

All the rain we received contributed to a large portion of ditch falling through right up to the edge of Highway 125 near Bob and Maxine Mason’s house last Sunday. It was thought for a while that the highway might have to be closed until it was fixed, but it was fixed that same day. It took several loads of dirt to fill up the hole.

I finally ended up with 10 chickens hatched from 24 eggs I had in an incubator. They are growing quickly and I still had them in a Rubbermaid tub in my laundry room. Well, they were getting too large for the tub and flying up to roost on the edge of the tub. Needless to say, they had made a mess of my laundry room, so Saturday I took it upon myself to finish a pen for them outside the back porch until we can get a little chicken house built for them. Yes, I am one of those people who put the chickens before the chicken house; at least I didn’t count my chickens before they hatched. Well, maybe I did a little bit. Anyway, by the time I finished the pen, I almost had heat stroke. Bob came out several times and wanted me to come inside to cool off but I was determined to finish it so he ended up coming outside to help me finish it. I finally gave up and went inside because I was truly sick. They are in the pen now and they are enjoying having more room as much as I am enjoying having them out of the house.

Sympathy goes out to the family of Velma Hankins, who passed away on August 1. A funeral service for Velma was held last Saturday, August 4 at Bradleyville General Baptist Church where she was a faithful servant.

Our sympathy also goes out to the family of Bert Horner, who passed away August 3. Bert was also a faithful member of Bradleyville General Baptist Church. Services for Bert will be 2:00 pm Saturday, August 11, at New Vision General Baptist Church in Taneyville.

New Mansion Church will have a back to school bash on Sunday evening, August 12. I know there will be good food and fellowship and everyone is welcome. For more information you may call Jeff and Cindy Marsh or Belinda Wyman.

Birthdays for the coming week include: August 9: Shekinah Clemans, Margaret Herd, Calvin Phillips; August 10: Don Whittaker; August 11: Faye Gerdes, Ashley Mann, Brady O’Neal, David Phillips, Don Snow; August 12: Mark Brumfield, Gerry Stafford, Danny Williams; August 13: Kirk Baird, Delbert Johnson, Tamra Whittaker; August 14: Joyce Adams, Larry Clark, Sara Cook, Roger Hodges, Bonnie Hurst; August 15: Donna Blair, Ally Swift.

News For the Week of August 1, 2012

Well, July has come and gone and was probably the hottest time I can ever remember. It has been this hot before, but to stay so hot for so long is surely a record. I know some can remember the drought years in the 50s and from what I hear it was bad then too. Plus, most people around here had no air conditioning or maybe any fans and a wood cook stove to cook on for their meals and to can food for the winter.  The heat still hurts, especially for those who have to work out in it, but we need to remember how it used to be and count our blessings, and pray for rain and cooler temperatures. I saw a friend’s comment on facebook and my dad used to say it also, that people that complain and wish for the “good old days” probably didn’t live through them. It was a hard life for most people. I have always enjoyed summer and dreaded fall and winter, but this year I find it is reversed, I am actually looking forward to fall.

I’m sorry I didn’t find any time to get any news in the past couple of weeks. My dad passed away and my son was here on vacation at the same time so needless to say I didn’t even think of writing anything.

Our family, along with several friends and neighbors gathered together at New Mansion Church Saturday morning, July 21 for a memorial service for my father, Willie Sloan. I could feel all the support, love and prayers that poured out upon our family. It was a very special time honoring one of the most special men I have ever known, and I am proud to say he was my dad.

Part of the reason David was here on vacation was to attend the 10 year reunion of his high school class. The class of 2002 had their class reunion last Saturday and several showed up to visit with their former classmates. David said even though they all keep in touch somewhat through facebook and phone calls it was nice to see each other in person and visit.

Our family spent a couple of days at Buck Creek while David was here, playing in the water and just being together. It is one of our favorite places to be, and we always have a great time.

Please remember Alice Wyman in your thoughts and prayers. Sue Jenkins let me know that she has been in the hospital several days now in very serious condition.  Alice is such a kind, gracious lady and I always enjoy reading her news articles from Rueter.

Congratulations to a special young couple, Lindsay Marsh and Koleder Ross who got engaged while in Florida on vacation with Lindsay’s family this past week. Both Lindsay and Koleder attend college at College of the Ozarks.

From the pictures I saw on facebook, it looked like the Marsh family had a fabulous time on vacation in Florida. I think the whole family went and that is always a special and fun time.

Lois Lux made a trip the weekend of the 22nd to take her grandsons home. She met their parents halfway between here and Texas. Riley and Tipton spent at least a couple of weeks with Grandma Lois and attended Vacation Bible School at New Mansion Church with their cousins, Gavin and Levi Lux and I know the family spent a day or more at Silver Dollar City, making those great memories.
Corby and Lisa Lux, Gavin and Levi spent some time this past weekend at Buck Creek, having fun in the water, swimming and doing some fishing, and maybe a little tanning.
Birthdays for the coming week include: August 1: Curt Krause, Renee Newman, Dalton Silvey; August 2: Alicia Crouch, Bill Guerin, Staci Dalton; August 3: Harleigh Hodges; August 4: Carolyn Cook, Harris Day; August 5: Lacy Jasper, Lynn Case, Mark Norwine; August 6: Taylor McHaffie; August 7: Colby Matthews, Dennis Sartin; August 8: Mark Combs, Ethan Harmon.

Anniversaries for the coming week include: August 4: Gregg and Kelli Johnson; August 6: Erin and Valerie Guerin.

Our family, along with several friends and neighbors gathered together at New Mansion Church last Saturday morning for a memorial service for my father, Willie Sloan. I could feel all the support, love and prayers that poured out upon our family. It was a very special time honoring one of the most special men I have ever known, and I am proud to say he was my dad.

Sunday after church, our family gathered at Beaver Creek boat dock area to spend the day visiting, eating, swimming, water skiing and just being together a little longer. We left a little while before everyone else, when you have a one year old running around trying to dig in the mud and sand, get to the water, and generally get into anything and everything, it is tiring, so Bob and I, Julie and Garrett came home and left David and Scott to ski a while.

I had a note from Sharon Grider last week and she mentioned she had a new grandbaby, and named after her, in a way. Sharona Leigh was born July 6, and weighed 8 lb and 7 oz. and Sharon said she is beautiful and has lots of dark hair. Congratulations to the whole family.

The Bradleyville Class of 2002 will be having their class reunion Saturday, July 28 at new Mansion Church. They wanted to have it at the school but the gym floor is being refinished at that time so it wasn’t possible.

Lois Lux made a trip last weekend to take her grandsons home. She met their parents halfway between here and Texas. Riley and Tipton spent at least a couple of weeks with Grandma Lois and attended Vacation Bible School with their cousins, Gavin and Levi Lux and I know the family spent a day or more at Silver Dollar City, making those great memories.

Lisa Lux is accompanying her grandmother to Chicago this week to attend services for her grandma’s brother-in-law. Our sympathy goes out to the family in this time of loss.

Jessi Laughlin, Hannah Swift and several others are finishing up details to start college next month. It is a very hectic but exciting time for them, I’m sure.

Birthdays for the coming week include: July 25: Amanda Heun, Josh Marsh, Gina Swift, Wayne Yeary; July 27: Hannah Guerin; July 28: Bridgette Storts, Christen Horner; July 29: Joe Gideon, Steve Hunsaker; July 30: Jessie Case, Dot Combs, Rick Pollard, Deborah Rogers; July 31: Peggy Essary; August 1: Curt Krause, Renee Newman, Dalton Silvey.

I hope I speak for everyone in the Bradleyville area when I say we are so thankful for all the firefighters and others that fought the wildfires in the area the past week. It was such an unbearably hot, dangerous job and they did their job and were successful in containing two separate fires, one north of Bradleyville near Martin Road and the other one south of Bradleyville on Glade Top with no loss of life or houses.

We are also so thankful for the good rains we received on Sunday which we hope doused any remaining fire. We got over an inch here at our house. I still don’t have the rain gauge put up so it’s just an estimate from what we see in the buckets we have sitting out.

On another thought, my beans were growing pretty good, but the dogs insist that I made those beds for a cool spot for them to lay and keep digging them out. I have run them out of the beds and put more dirt in, planted more beans, and run the dogs out again and again. They are stubborn animals, but they have met their match. I think I am more stubborn than they are. After the last time they dug them up, Bob and I fixed up a fence around the beans with some old woven wire fence we used to have for tomato cages. So far, so good.

Our sympathy goes out to Mrs. Helen Maggard and the rest of the family and friends of Burl Maggard, who passed away last Saturday, July 7. Burl was a pillar of New Mansion Church, was the Postmaster at Bradleyville for several years, and has always been involved in the community and touched many, many lives with his life and testimony. Burl was known far and wide for his beautiful singing voice and always sang the bass part at church, and if you were ever blessed to hear him sing you know what I am talking about. He was one of the finest men I have ever had the privilege of knowing.

Our sympathy also goes out to Sue Jenkins and the rest of the family of Bill Jenkins who passed away last Friday night, July 6 after a long hard fought battle with cancer. Bill was a man who knew how to do just about anything. He was always interested in some activity or hobby. He was Grandpa Bill to two of my grandkids and I know they are going to miss him very much.

Our son, David will be arriving for a two week visit this Saturday. His graduating class of 2002 will be having their ten year reunion while he is here.

There will be another swap meet at the old ball field in Bradleyville on Saturday, July 21. Eddie Hunsaker says they have lots of sellers and lots of items and encourages everyone to come and see what they have for sale. It only costs $5 for sellers and it is free admission for people who want to buy or just look.

Birthdays for the coming week include: July 12: Hannah Howie; July 13: Josh Adams, Harley Guerin; July 14: Ginger Harmon; July 15: Phillip Day, Cindy Todd, Jarett Yeary; July 16: Ron Clark, L.T. Collins, Richard Gott, Jan Robertson, David Robertson, David Rogers, Richard Stoecker; July 17: Alexis Combs; July 18: Rhonda Grigg, Robbie Harmon.

Anniversaries: July 12: Joe and Melissa McCleary; July 13: Vic and Deanna Badovinatz; July 14: Vernon and Barbara Fuller; July 16: Junior and Peggy Hicks; July 17: Larry and Donna Blair.

News For the Week of July 1, 2012

It’s hard to be thankful for the extremely hot weather we’ve been having, but think of it this way, think of how much you have saved from buying gasoline to mow your yard.  If your yard is like mine, it crunches and crackles under your feet. I haven’t mowed since the first week of June, except one spot where the water faucet has leaked when I am watering my gardens. There are a few spots that have a grown up a weed or two, but I am ignoring them. The dust it would stir up to cut down a few weeds is a big factor in that decision. The past few years we have had to mow at least once a week, and while I love to mow and love a lush, green yard, I will be thankful that I haven’t had to buy much gasoline yet this summer.

On another thought, my beans were growing pretty good, but the dogs insist that I made those beds for a cool spot for them to lay and keep digging them out. I have run them out of the beds and put more dirt in, planted more beans, and run the dogs out again and again. They are stubborn animals, but they have met their match, I think I am more stubborn than they are. Over the weekend, Bob and I fixed up a fence around the beans with some old woven wire fence we used to have for tomato cages.

Bob and I went to the Beacon Park gospel concerts last Friday and Saturday nights, seeing the Mike Bowling Family and The Perrys on Friday night and Mike Upright, The Whisnants and The McKameys on Saturday night, plus the host group, the Lighthouse Messengers on both nights.  Saturday we made a longer trip out of it, going to Buck Creek first to play in the water a while, then crossed the lake on the Peel Ferry, driving through Lead Hill to Omaha, Arkansas where we stopped and bought a few peaches and a watermelon and then on to the concert at Ridgeway, a few miles north of Harrison. Although the temperatures stayed above 100 there was a nice breeze blowing and the singing was wonderful. We saw several people we knew from around here and several we have made the acquaintance of from going to singings through the years.

New Mansion Church cancelled their Independence Day celebration on July 1 because of the extreme temperatures and dry conditions but has re-scheduled a celebration on Sunday, July 15, which will coincide with the VBS program. It is not certain whether there will be any fireworks at that time or not, depending on the weather conditions. New Mansion’s VBS will be held July 9-13 with classes for all ages. Everyone is welcome. For more information, contact Belinda Wyman.
