News For the Week of January 28, 2013

I am loving this mild weather for a few days. I plan to use one of these mild days to do some yard work, of which my yard needs badly. Leaves that were waiting for a mild winter day to be raked, and goodness, the holes all over the yard that rambunctious cattle made during the wet weather earlier in the winter. Bob moved the bull to another pasture so they don't ramble around like they were doing. He was the ringleader for sure.

Our Sympathy goes out to the family of Luene Johnson who passed away early Monday morning. Luene had been in bad health for a few years. Luene had a very outgoing personality with a wonderful sense of humor and I always loved visiting with her.

Continued prayers for Clarence Rogers who is in the hospital. We hope he doesn't have to stay very long, he is probably like Bob and can't be bothered staying confined when he thinks he has stuff he needs to be doing.

Also remember Cole Thomas who was having an MRI on Monday to determine what was wrong with his ankle, or leg which he hurt while playing basketball. We hope that it is not much wrong and can be healed or fixed in time for him to finish the basketball season.

Somebody mentioned that the benefit for the Bad News Bears baseball team held at Plainview School a few weeks ago had a really good turnout and everyone had a lot of fun while there. They said the team is looking forward to another great year.

If you haven't been past Hercules Church lately you will be surprised to see they are adding on to the church. I don't know for sure what the new space will include but have heard they will have new bathrooms and more space for classrooms.

We are staying busy this week going to ballgames, all away. Special anniversary wishes go out to Bill and Clessie Hurst who will be celebrating 66 years of marriage on January 31. I was also remembering Leon and Dot Combs' anniversary. That was back when I was decorating cakes. I made them a small wedding cake for a reception that Joe and Paulette held for them right after they got married. I can't remember the year though.

Normal weather, cold, not so cold, warm, freezing, like the old saying, if you don't like the weather stick around for a day or two, it will change. Son David lives on Maui, and if I ever ask him what the weather is like, he answers the same, wonderful . Eighty degree weather every day and seventy degree weather every night. Now of course, nobody is alike and that would get very boring to a lot of people. David loves it and I would like to see how long it would take me to get tired of it, or if I would.

Son-in-law Scott Lawson is in San Antonio, Texas, in his third week of basic training for the Air National Guard, and has been able to call home three times so far to talk to Julie. He is doing good but says he would appreciate everyone's prayers. Of course he misses his family and they miss him. Garrett has a picture folder with his daddy's picture in it and a video of him and Daddy wrestling in the floor and one reading a book to him. It was after Scott joined that he and Julie found out they were expecting twins and of course we are all hoping he will be finished with his training and tech school in time to be home for their births.

Bob and I attended the memorial service for Larry Soutee last Saturday at KSE Funeral Home at Forsyth. David Koenig officiated and several of those attending shared memories of Larry. It was a very nice service and the military part of a service always makes me cry, it is so solemn and special.

It was Youth Night Sunday night at New Mansion Church and the younger youth group put on a very good skit about Moses, Pharaoh and the 10 plagues. It was very entertaining too to see the costumes the kids were wearing. Some of them were uncomfortable like Hunter Chamber's costume which was large balls of hail made from aluminum foil with some battery powered red lights hanging from around his neck to symbolize fire. Some had plastic grasshoppers attached, some had plastic spiders (to represent lice in the absence of plastic lice) or plastic frogs, but no matter what costume they had to wear they all did an awesome job.

Ballgames this week include a high school game at home with Dora on Friday, January 25 for both the boys and girl's teams. Both the boys and girls will also play at Norwood on Tuesday, January 29. The Pee Wees will play Plainview at home on Thursday, January 24 and then next week the Pee Wee boys will play in the Taneyville Tournament.

Snowbirds, robins and redbirds are sitting all over my backyard, but no snow has fallen yet and I hope it stays that way. No snow, but the frost was so thick this morning it almost looked like snow. Then it clouded up, and the old wisdom says that clouding up on a frost means it will snow that day. The birds flocking in big numbers is a sign of snow coming too. I did see a few flakes when I was out running errands so I hope that fulfills the old sayings for now. I saw that east and south of here and some places in Arkansas did get a few inches of snow. It is pretty but that doesn't persuade me to want any.

While I was out running errands today, of course I had to go to some of the thrift stores and I found a very nice high chair at my favorite shop at a bargain price. With twin grandchildren and a great-grandchild expected next summer I am on the hunt for lots of baby equipment.

Julie and Garrett Lawson visited with Garrett's grandpa, Ivan Lawson and great-grandmother Dorothy for a while Tuesday afternoon. Last week Garrett stayed the day with his grandma, Carrie Jenkins while Julie went to a doctor appointment in Springfield.

The Pee Wees will play basketball at Taneyville Thursday, January 17, and the Pee Wee girls only will play Mark Twain at home on Tuesday, January 22.

The high school girls will play at Greenwood High School on Tuesday, January 22.

Please call me at 796-2651 if you have any news.

Birthdays for the coming week include: January 18: Sue Bettis, Carla Braden, Marlana Bryne, Brad Hodges, Brittany Lumley; January 19: Jess Cook, Tucker Lux, Emma Marsh, Donetta Terry; January 20: Riley Combs; January 21: Ethel Metcalf; January 22: Megan Howie; January 23: Ann Blair, Jason Haden, Jackie Hodges, Greg Robertson, Kelli Stafford.

Anniversaries for the coming week include: January 21: Lee and Sue Bettis; January 23: Rod and LaDonna Johnson.

Fair weather in the forecast, but everyone knows it can change so fast around here. Some want snow in the worst way, I am in the group that doesn't want snow at all, and would be happy if it was sixty degrees all winter.

Of course, I'm looking forward to springtime. Bob bought a new tractor to put in the woods but I am going to kidnap it this spring to plow a new garden spot and maybe move some stuff around in the yard. I may even get a great big rock to put in my yard since there will be no excuse not to with all that new horsepower.

Bradleyville students went back to school this last Tuesday, ending their Christmas break. It seems like it was longer than usual but I was told it was just one day longer. The kids keep a very accurate count of the days they go to school and the days they get to stay home. Now the wishing for snow days and the end of the school year begins.

Ballgames will be Friday, January 11 when the high school boys play at Mansfield, and the boys will play January 14-19 in the Mark Twain Conference Tournament at Bradleyville this year. The high school girls will play at Forsyth Thursday, January 10 and the girls will also play in the Mark Twain Conference Tournament January 14-19.

The Pee Wee teams will start play this week with a game at home on Friday, January 11 with Thornfield. The Pee Wees will have a game at Chadwick on Tuesday, January 15 and then another game on Thursday, January 17 at Taneyville. I have been know to make mistakes in the schedule and sometimes the schedule changes so please check with the school if you need to make sure.

Condolences to the family of Robert Chaney who passed away last week. I know he will be missed by all his family and friends. Robert was one of those people who could and would do just about anything to help anybody who needed it.

A special Happy Birthday wish to Gladys Johnson who had her 91st birthday this past weekend.

Birthdays for the coming week include: January 9: Darla Day, J.D. Day, Gale Osburn; January 11: Greg Blair, Bill Dalton, Peggy Krause; January 12: Denise Flanigan, Everett Sartin; January 14: Kaitlyn Hunsaker, Corey Ridings; January 15: Linda Black, Jim Crouch, Manny Nelson.
