News For the Week of March 21, 2012

What beautiful weather we’ve had the last week. It got so warm I was tempted to turn on the air conditioner a time or two, but made myself turn on a fan instead and enjoyed the nice breezes coming through the house from the open windows.

The violets and wild verbena have burst into bloom along with redbud, peach trees , elm trees and many other types of trees. I have several types of daffodils, tulips, verbena, hyacinths and grape hyacinths blooming in the yard right now. I love all the blooms, it is so beautiful outside.

Our squirrel is really enjoying the elm blooms, preferring them over the walnuts that are left right now. The other day I watched one red squirrel coming up the hill toward the walnut trees in the corner of the yard where another red squirrel was already sitting. The first squirrel would run a few feet, stop and look, run a few more feet, run up the sycamore tree, come back down and continue a few more feet. I could tell when the second squirrel caught sight of the first one, he sat straight up and held himself perfectly still while he craned his neck to see better. They looked at each other just a few seconds and then both shot forward toward each other. They collided in a fur flying ball, wrestled, fought and rolled a few seconds, then one took off running out of the yard, across the field with the other one on its heels. I admit I am easily entertained. Oh well, I am never bored.

Delbert Johnson went Sunday afternoon to watch two of his grandsons, Dean and Ethan Rogers get baptized. Congratulations to these two fine young men in their step of faith. When Delbert returned home around 8:00pm Sunday night he found that someone had broken into his home and stolen 9 or 10 of his guns. He is asking anybody who might have noticed a different vehicle at his house Sunday between the hours of 9:45am-8:00pm to please get in touch with him or his son, Dustin. His phone number is 546-7172. His son Dustin’s number is 546-7153.

Back by popular demand, Bradleyville School will have a Carnival this Friday, March 23 from 5:30pm-9:00pm. It is an all-school fundraiser and each club will have their own booth. There will be many activities including a cake walk, country store, bean bag toss, lollipop tree, dunking booth, basketball shoot, and the FFA will have their plant sale there also.

It was also mentioned that Senior, Ashton Crum won 3rd place in a state art competition and is eligible to compete in the nationals.

New Mansion had a talent show for Youth Night last Sunday night and there were several unique talents performed. Kayla Combs entertained us with a nose flute, Heidi Todd made roses from play dough, Ethan Todd amazed us with a cup stacking display, Levi and Lisa Lux demonstrated their artistic talent with a game called “Scribble”. Braden Potter played a great trumpet solo, Hunter Chambers, along with his family sang his favorite song, “Inside the Gate”, and Arica Todd did a wonderful job singing “Jesus Loves Me”. Vicky Blair sang a song, Kelvin and Melanie Whittaker whistled two songs and Melanie sang with one of them, Greg Potter played a couple of songs on his mandolin, the Crouch family played a bluegrass song with their instruments, Lisa Lux read a Veggie Tales book and did the “voices”, Melanie Whittaker and Kayla Combs sang together, Emily Todd sang a song and Emily, Ethan and Heidi sang another song together. News For the Week of March 12, 2012

The Bradleyville students have a week of spring break this week and I know they are all enjoying it a lot.

The weather is supposed to be pretty this week and that will help, although the past few years it has been cold and rainy on spring break. I doubt the kids really cared that much because they didn’t have school and that was the most important part. Jessi has spent the week working with his Grandpa Bob and Scott Lawson so I don’t know if he would have rather had spring break or school.

“Hoopin’ It Up”, a basketball program for the elementary schools in the area continues the rest of the month of March at Bradleyville School on Saturdays. The teams are coached by high school kids and are being very well attended.

Baseball practice has started for the boy’s team and softball practice for the girls will start soon. I love to watch baseball and softball but none of my grandkids are playing this year. I think they are all more interested in fishing than ball this time of year. I can’t blame them; I like to go fishing too.

Hayden reminded me that sucker grabbing season will open this week, Thursday, March 15 and Danielle said the white bass will soon be running.

New Mansion Church will be hosting a talent show for the Youth Night on Sunday night, March 18. Everyone is welcome to come and watch or/and bring a talent to show. If you have any questions you can call the Youth leaders, Alicia or Jason Crouch at 796-2694.

Our sympathy goes out to the family and friends of Irene Floyd who passed away last Friday.

News For the Week of March 1, 2012

Bob and I have gone all winter without getting any of the nasty bugs that have been going around, but they finally caught us. We both had fever, chills, coughing, and Bob had a bad headache and backache. Needless to say, we didn’t enjoy any of the beautiful weather over the weekend.  Bob got up Monday morning and went to the doctor which showed me just how bad he felt, because he will never go to the doctor. I took his normal role and refused to go, I didn’t feel like I had it as severe as Bob does and I didn’t think the doctor would give me any medicine so I stayed home.  ( They did give him medicine, and I went the next day and got some too!)

Congratulations to Mark and Elizabeth Brumfield on the birth of their son, Liam Isaac Brumfield, on February 24. Liam was born at Skaggs and weighed 7 lbs. 6 oz. and was 21 inches long. He is a beautiful baby boy. Congratulations to the grandparents too, and the whole family.

Congratulations to a very special couple, Tanner Lux and Amelia Mann, on their recent engagement.

My dad, J.W. Sloan will turn 94 years old on March 1. I always thought my dad could do anything, and I still think that. If I ever need advice on how to fix anything, from vehicles to well pumps, how to grow something or how to build a cabinet, he can tell me how to get it done.

Birthdays: March 1: Bob Dalton, Brett Johnson, Heather Maggard, J.W. Sloan; March 2: Dannon Hall, Morgan Lawrence; March 3: Janice Gray; March 4: Lee Bettis, Lindsey Clemans, Boone Hodges; March 6: Dillon Gross; March 7: Lori Burkhart, Ray Hurst.

Anniversaries: March 2: Bill and Paula Walker.
