News For the Week of November 12, 2014

Beautiful weather this morning as I write the news. I would rather be outside doing something in the yard than cooped up in the house. The way the forecast reads this will be the last nice day in a long while. The weather people even mentioned snow flurries for next Saturday. That will be good for deer season, the cold weather will help keep the deer.

New Mansion Church will be having their annual Deer Hunters Chili Feed the next two Saturdays, starting at 10:00am and going until dark, with lots more than just chili. There is always a big variety of chili, hot, mild, and some with lots of different ingredients. There will probably also be dishes like spaghetti, stew, chicken and noodles, and lots of different desserts. Everybody is welcome to come eat and share their hunting stories or just visit.

New Mansion Church will also be having a Thanksgiving Dinner on November 23 at 6:00pm. Everyone is welcome. Bring a covered dish or just yourself and join in the celebration of Thanksgiving.

The Alumni Game at Bradleyville School will be on Friday, November 14, starting at 6:00pm. Lady Eagles coach Autumn Thomas says they have several alumni signed up already to play ball. It should be very entertaining.

Meet the Eagles will be on Friday, November 21, also starting at 6:00pm. The boys and girls high school basketball teams will be introduced and will play some ball.

I have been so out of the loop lately and cannot remember much but did remember something that happened a few weeks ago that needs mentioning. The Bradleyville Screaming Eagle Band, under the direction of Chris Sprague, marched in the MSU Homecoming Parade on October 18. The band won first place for Class 1 Division, and also Outstanding Drum Major and Outstanding Color Guard. If you haven't heard the Screaming Eagle Band play you need to attend a parade they are marching in, one of the ballgames that the Pep Band plays at or go to one of the concerts at school. I think you will be impressed with the level of talent and hard work that is involved. Chris Sprague has been band director and head of the music department at Bradleyville School for many years and she also does an outstanding job with all aspects of the music program.

The hard freeze put an end to almost all my flowers but I was happy to see that a couple of planters full of petunias were spared some way and are still pretty and blooming. I don't know why they didn't freeze because they were right with all of my other flowers like impatiens, vincas, and some roses which look pretty sad now, but it makes me happy that I still have a few flowers outside.

Halloween was a very chilly experience this year for all the little trick-or-treaters. Julie's twins were dressed up like Pebbles and Bam Bam and we had to add a little bit to their caveman costumes to keep them warm when they went out that evening. We had a dozen trick-or-treaters and that was a few more than we had the last couple of years. And half of those were our grandchildren.

Deepest sympathy goes out to the Guerin family on the passing of Timothy Guerin who was involved in a tragic accident on Halloween night.

Bradleyville School will be having a special program for all the area veterans and active duty servicemen on Tuesday, November 11, starting at 1:00PM. All veterans and servicemen and their families are invited to take part in the tribute. Everyone in the community is welcome to attend also.

The Bradleyville FFA officers made a trip to Louisville Kentucky last week and our grandson Hayden said they had a good time there.

Such nice weather this past weekend to enjoy the outdoors for a few more days. The little yellow beetles are enjoying the warm weather too and are out in force this year. If they would just stay outside I wouldn't mind them quite so much.

New Mansion Church had their Centennial Celebration last Saturday, with lots of good singing, old photos and quilts to look at, a country store, petting zoo, games, food and fellowship. At dark everyone enjoyed fireworks. The next day on Sunday, the church had a hayride up to Caney picnic grounds. There was lots of playing and exploring and a service there before coming home.

Scott Lawson had duty weekend at Whiteman AFB this past weekend, so Bob and I stayed home with our twin grandbabies and our newest grandbaby so Julie could go on the hayride with Garrett. After the hayride the family came to our house and we had a belated birthday supper for Bob. I had the bright idea that after the hayride, everyone would want a nice hearty bowl of soup to warm them up, so I fixed a pot of chili, a pot of hamburger vegetable soup and a pot of tater soup. Not such a great idea since it was up in the 80s on Sunday, but we had soup anyway and nobody seemed to mind. We had cherry chip cake and apple crisp for dessert and Garrett loved sampling the cherry icing on the cake.

The Bradleyville School will be having a program and tribute to our veterans on Veteran's Day, November 11, starting at 1:00PM. All veterans and active duty servicemen and their families are welcome to attend, as well as the general public. If you have any questions you may call the school at 796-2288.
