News For the Week of October 24, 2012

The trees this fall have been absolutely gorgeous. The high winds we got a few days ago blew a lot of the leaves off the trees, but there are still many brightly colored leaves and many trees are still green, so we will have a display for a while longer. I have a young red maple tree in my front yard that was about six feet tall when I bought and planted it around eight years ago. It has grown very well and it’s around 15-18 feet tall now. It hasn’t been very colorful until this year, but this year it is starting to show its colors. I was starting to suspect it might not be a red maple but a silver maple, which are scattered all over my yard. I like them just fine, but wanted a red one. Red, orange, yellow and lots of green left too. Whatever variety it is, I like it.

The Hunsaker Family Singers were at the Protem Union Church Sunday morning, where Ed Hunsaker is now the pastor. Besides Ed and Leona, their daughter Kayla Combs sings with them and also Melanie Whittaker. They sang at our church back in June, but we were gone to a family reunion and missed them. I’ve heard all of them sing individually or in a duet, but I hope I get to hear them all together sometime soon.

Well, my mistakes continue and I have to apologize again. I said last week that we would be going to the FFA chili supper and auction and mistakenly put the wrong date for it. It actually will be on Friday evening, November 9 starting at 6:00 pm, with the auction after the chili supper. The Alumni ballgame will be on Thursday evening, November 8. For more information you may call the school at 796-2288.

I don’t have any excuse for all the mistakes I have been making, only an explanation. I try to write the news at the last minute before the deadline and then I am in a hurry trying to get everything in, seems like I’m not a good multi-tasker.

Hayden Crouch got a nice little buck with his bow last Friday morning. It was just the right size to be tasty.

New Mansion Church will be having a Fall Festival on Saturday, October 27, starting at 1:00pm and lasting until the evening, sometime around 6:00pm. There will be singing starting at 4:00pm, lots of food and games, everybody is welcome. The next day, Sunday, October 28 will be the hayride from the church to the Caney picnic grounds with a service on the mountain starting at 4:00pm. There will be a potluck dinner immediately after church and the hayride will start around 2:00pm. For more information about either of these events you may call Cindy Marsh or Belinda Wyman.

My birthday and anniversary lists are old and I am revising them. Some of the names on the lists are familiar, but I don’t really know the people the dates are associated with, so if you would like your name to remain on either list and you are not sure I personally know you, please give me a call at 796-2651 or e-mail me at karencase.55@gmail.com. I’m not really sure if I will even continue with the birthdays and anniversaries, but time will tell.

Birthdays for the coming week include: October 24: Mike Hunsaker; October 25: Tim Stafford; October 26: Susie Sims, Megan Taylor; October 27: Justin Adams, Kenton Wiggins; October 28: Bubba Taylor; October 29: Bo Bonner; October 30: Margaret Dalton, Dee Hodges, Walter Rogers, Sandy Ross.

News For the Week of October 15, 2012

I still have a hummingbird once in a while, I guess just passing through on their way south. I spied one on Friday evening and again on Sunday morning. I still have one feeder hanging outside with a tiny amount of sugar water in it and I have plenty of hummingbird friendly flowers left blooming so I know the stray ones traveling through can find something to eat at my house. I love watching the little hummers and will miss them until spring, but it is a nice break to quit buying so much sugar.

Jason and Hayden Crouch spent the weekend with a bunch of friends at Caney Mountain, muzzleloader hunting. Some of the others that hunted or just camped were Kent Day, Sam Day, Tony Todd, Kevin Compton, Tim Stafford, Gary and Barbara Casey, Warren Walls, Larry Blair, David Rogers, Eric Guerin, Dustin Johnson, Duane Rogers and Dean Rogers.  Hayden got a nice three point buck and Jason got a doe. Several more got a deer but I’m not sure who or what so I’ll leave it at that.

Jason and Hayden made it home in time on Sunday afternoon to join the rest of the family at our house for a birthday dinner for Bob. We had a good time eating and visiting with each other. My oven is broke again, seems it stays that way, so I have to use my little toaster oven when I want to bake something. That was no problem, we had cherry chip cupcakes with cherry icing which is a favorite of Bob's and Alicia, and chocolate cupcakes with fudge frosting for the chocolate lovers in the family. I also found a couple of small pie pans my step-mom Donna Sloan had given me to use in my toaster oven, so I made two small apple custard crunch pies, another one of Bob's favorites. I'm not sure that is the right name for them, but that is the name I gave them. Bob's great-aunt, Flora Chapman used to make them for him and they are really good. Especially when you put a big spoonful of vanilla ice cream on top.

Sympathy goes out to the family and friends of Bob Smith who passed away last week. Bob was married to Gina (Herd) Smith who grew up in Bradleyville, and they have lived in Goodhope for the last several years. I remember being at many softball games where Bob was an enthusiastic player. He loved to play softball and was fun to be around. Bob was a faithful Sunday School teacher at Bradleyville General Baptist where he also played the drums. We went to the visitation and it was very well attended with many family and friends paying their respects to a wonderful man who will be sorely missed.

I made a mistake last week when I said the Bradleyville Swap Meet was the 27th. It is next Saturday, October 20th, and Eddie Hunsaker told me it will be the last one this year and they will start them again next spring. It has always been on the third Saturday of the month. Sorry for the mix-up.

The Lady Eagles basketball team will be having a garage sale at the same time as the Swap Meet to help cover the cost of their basketball attire.

It will be fun to go to the Alumni games on November 8th   and watch some of the alumni play ball against each other. Bob and Kyle and Jessi all plan to play, although Kyle and Jessi will be in the younger group and Bob in the older group. I got some looks from the grandsons when I told them that I was going to play also. I think they were relieved when I told them I was just joking.

We also plan to go to the FFA chili supper and auction at the school on November 8. They always have something for everyone. Eating starts at 6:00pm. If you would like more information please call the school at 796-2288.

You still have a few days if you want to order some Rada cutlery from one of the Juniors.
I ordered some knives and I think I’ll order a spatula and knife sharpener also before they quit taking orders.

Congratulations to the Bradleyville Jr. High girls who won second place in the Thornfield tournament in a well-played game against the Thornfield team, who won first place. Both Jr. High teams will play Lutie at Bradleyville on Thursday, October 18, and then the boys will play in the Lutie Boys tournament October 22-26.

Volleyball is heading into districts this week and then the season will be over for this year.

Birthdays for the coming week include: October 18: Kelli Clemans, Linda Derr, Jake Silvey, Tony Todd, Ashley Wilkey; October 20: Dennis Case, Darrin Hurst, Emily Ridings; October 21: Kathy Dorsey; October 22: Myka Hurst, Tom Schultz; October 23: Vicki Blair, Justin Bonner; October 24: Mike Hunsaker.

News For the Week of October 8, 2012

The jackets and sweaters and even Bob’s insulated coveralls came out over the weekend with the cooler temperatures. I am never ready to bundle up against the cold, but it was either put on a sweater or shiver, so I gave in to fall.

I brought some of my flowers into the house Sunday evening, afraid they were going to get frozen, but it didn’t get that cold here and we didn’t even get any frost. I am glad, I like to keep my flowers as long as possible and with the dry hot summer they just started looking good around the last of August.

Our condolences to the family of Wayne Grigg who passed away last Thursday after a ten year battle with cancer. Wayne was a very pleasant man and very highly thought of in our community and will be missed very much by all his family and friends.

The Bradleyville Lady Eagles will be having a garage sale on Saturday, October 27, the same day of the Bradleyville Swap Meet. The proceeds will go to the Lady Eagles basketball team to help with costs of their basketball attire.

News For the Week of October 1, 2012

I thought all my hummingbirds had already left or migrated through and I hadn’t seen any for days, then Sunday morning I saw just one lone hummingbird zipping around, sipping a little from first one feeder then the other, then flying over to take a taste from my morning glories. He must have missed the memo to leave. What sugar water is left in the feeders is acting as a wasp trap for yellow jackets. Every time I go to the feeders, there are dozens of yellow jackets drowned in the syrup. I will be glad to take them down this year.

Last Thursday night we enjoyed the benefit concert of the very popular Southern Gospel group, Karen Peck and New River at Bradleyville School. There was a nice crowd there and over $2800 was raised for missions work for missionaries serving in the Philippines.

I saw lots of people I know from this area, and some I barely know and others we have seen at other concerts through the years that I don’t really know but recognize their faces. We sat down right in front of Robert and Louise Moore and their daughter Melissa from Butterfield, MO who we got acquainted with at a concert in Ridgeway, Arkansas years ago and only see once or twice a year at gospel concerts. I also got to visit with a friend I went to high school with over 40 years ago; her name was Karen Hodges then. Sorry it took me a while to recognize you, Karen! It’s only been around 20+ years since I saw you last. Hope it isn’t that long before we see each other again.

Friday night and Saturday night we attended the 5th Sunday meeting held at Sardis General Baptist Church at Forsyth. It was very well attended with a fish fry on Friday night before the service began, and a Dutch oven dinner on Saturday night before the service. We couldn’t get around in time to eat with them, but sure did enjoy the services. Pastor Josh Johannes welcomed everyone on both nights with words of encouragement. Sue Clayton brought a good message Friday night and Corby Lux preached on Saturday night.

The clouds cleared out and the sun shone brightly to make it a beautiful afternoon last Saturday when we joined several friends and family members and attended a baptism at the slab on Little Beaver behind the old cheese plant. My stepmother, Donna Sloan was baptized, along with Ron Clark, Jan Clark, and Kenneth. Sorry I don’t know Kenneth’s last name.

Donna Sloan and several of her brothers, sisters, and other family members had a family reunion at the Bradleyville Nazarene fellowship hall immediately before the baptism.

Bob and I enjoyed going to the Gospel Showcase in Springfield at the Remington’s Event Center last Sunday afternoon, sponsored by KWFC radio station. We enjoyed some very talented singers from the area and the comedy of Jarrett Dougherty, who was hilarious as usual. We thought we were going to hear the Hosea Bilyeu Family perform too, but we were mistaken and they weren’t singing at that event, but at a church in Nixa later that evening.

Congratulations to the Bradleyville Junior High boys’ basketball team who won first place in the Taneyville tournament last week.

Junior High basketball games will be next week when the girls travel to Thornfield for the Thornfield tournament, October 8-12. The Junior High boys don’t have any games on the schedule until later in October.

There aren’t any volleyball games this week but next week will be at home with Forsyth on Tuesday, October 9.

Birthdays for the coming week include: October 3: Kaycee Howie, Caitlyne Pollard, Dylan Rogers, Ryan Saffle, Teresa Stafford; October 5: Josh Burns, Nathan Easley, Janice Walker, Bert Smith, October 6: Lila Roberts, Michael Robertson; October 7: Randall Cummings, Barbara Hunter; October 8: Garland Smith, Gaylene Madison; October 9: Mike Yeary; October 10: Judy Clemans, Carla Combs, Karen Cantrell.

News For the Week of September 24, 2012

I built a little fire in the fireplace one morning last week and it felt very nice. It wasn’t all that cold, but just chilly enough to be uncomfortable to me and the granddaughters.  We could have stood it, but we had to cut down a dead hickory tree in our yard a few weeks ago and when we did, I carried some of the wood to the porch. It was around 95 degrees the day we cut it, and Bob laughingly asked if I was going to make a fire that day. I said no but I would have the wood ready when I wanted to, and of course, I’ve wanted to use some of that hickory wood and smell it burning ever since that day.

Congratulations to Jess and Melanie Smith Cook on their recent marriage. They had their wedding at the farm of Melanie’s great grandma, Mary Henson and it looked beautiful from the pictures I saw on facebook. I have been to the farm a few times and it is beautiful there and is a wonderful place for a wedding.

Get well wishes go out to Nikki Combs who had to have her appendix removed.

I heard the McKillip reunion was very well attended with a large crowd, lots of food, singing and fellowship.

David came home for a visit the past week and it got very busy around my house. I was wiped out and did nothing over the weekend but lie around and sleep.

So thankful for all the good rain that has fallen to refresh our yards, gardens and creeks.  I love rainy weather although it makes it difficult for Bob to work in the timber. The cooler temperatures have also been a relief to all those working outside. I admit I like warmer temperatures better, but I do enjoy all the seasons.

Scott Lawson has enlisted in the National Guard and Julie and Scott’s mom, Carrie Jenkins are going to watch him be sworn in. Garrett will be staying with me that day, one of my favorite ways to spend the day. Scott won’t be serving active duty until later in the year.

Thirty days hath September, April, June and November. All the rest have thirty-one, saving February which alone has twenty-eight. Do any of you remember this little rhyme? I learned it sometime in grade school. I think of it every year when September arrives. I have been looking forward to September this year, hoping for cooler temperatures. It has been very pleasant the past week or so.

We had close to 3 inches of rain total, thanks to Hurricane Isaac. So sorry for all people who had the damage and destruction it caused down south before it downgraded, but we needed every drop of rain we got.

Congratulations to Alison and Brent Maggard on the birth of their daughter, Leighton Hope. Leighton was born on August 30. Leighton is the great-great granddaughter of Juanita Shortt.
