News For the Week of October 24, 2011

We had a busy and great time over the weekend, starting  with the Fall Festival at church. The weather was gorgeous, simply a perfect fall day to enjoy all the activities. There was lots of singing, visiting, and a hayride to the pumpkin patch. In the evening we all gathered into the church for a pulled pork dinner with lots of side dishes to go with it.

Sunday after church was the “official” hayride out to the Caney Picnic Area. There were two trailers full of people and a convoy of vehicles following behind, winding around the ridge roads, having a great time enjoying the sunshine and fellowship. The weather was again perfect, and the trees on the mountain were finally coming into their colors, and were beautiful.

As soon as the trailers got to the picnic grounds almost all the kids and a lot of the grownups took off to go over the hill to the cave. I have never been back in the cave, I have been just inside the entrance and that is enough for me. I am some claustrophobic and from the looks of some of the kids when they come out with clay mud on their knees and elbows I don’t want to get in any place that small. I can do the cave at Silver Dollar City and it doesn’t bother me, but if it involves crawling through a space, please leave me out!

At the campground we joined several other churches that were also having their hayrides. Several from each church joined together to sing some songs and then Jeff D. Marsh brought the message before we all took off for home.

Soon after we arrived at the picnic area several of the volunteer firefighters were called out to a fire.
Thurman and Kay Whittaker are home after taking a road trip out east, to celebrate their 50th anniversary.  I’m not sure all the places they went, but they went through fourteen states all up and down the east coast from Virginia to Maine and then back home and Kay said they had a wonderful time. They covered 4172 miles on their trip. She said when they started they hadn’t made up their minds which way to go, they had thought about going to Colorado. Then Thurman heard on the radio that it was snowing in Colorado, so they turned the other way and went east. Kay said they saw a lot of damage still there from Hurricane Irene and the people are still busy cleaning up from that storm.

Congratulations to Chris and Misty (Bettis) Wilkerson on their marriage. They got married last Saturday, Oct. 23 at the Honey Branch Cave and Melanie Whittaker said it was a very beautiful wedding.

News For the Week of October 17, 2011

We had most of our kids and grandkids here last Saturday evening to help celebrate Bob’s birthday with a chili and potato soup supper and cherry chip cake for dessert. Bob’s mom also came out and spent the evening with us, telling some good stories of when Bob was little and growing up. Sunday afternoon Bob and his mom and I went to Branson and over-ate…oops, did I say that…we ate dinner at Golden Corral. All in all, Bob had a good weekend of celebrating his birthday.

Julie and Scott were visiting his mother and grandmother over the weekend and Julie says the view and the changing leaves are gorgeous from his mom’s house, which is near Eastern Gate Church. I love the views from that part of the country, it seems you are sitting on the very top of the world. We don’t have that kind of view, but the leaves and scenery are pretty spectacular around our house too this year.

Joe Hurst was visiting with his parents, Bill and Clessie Hurst this past weekend, and brought them down a half-bushel of apples.

Don’t forget the Bradleyville FFA will be having a chili supper and auction on Nov. 4, supper starting at 6 p.m. with a silent auction during the chili supper and the regular auction starting at 7 p.m. The members of FFA are also selling raffle tickets for a really nice knife made by the McGinnis family.

Congratulations to the Bradleyville Jr. High boys on winning consolation in the Thornfield tournament, playing a good game with the Thornfield team. I know Plainview won third place against Ava Victory Academy but we didn’t stay for the championship game between Taneyville and Lutie so I don’t know who won that game.

High school volleyball will start district play next week and girl’s Jr. High basketball will be in a tournament at Lutie.

Another reminder that New Mansion Church will have a Fall Festival on Saturday, Oct. 22 starting at 1 p.m. There are going to be lots of fun activities, including a country store, a BB/bow shoot, old time pictures, flower basket making, a skillet throw, a hayride to the pumpkin patch and old time singing. Everyone welcome, singers and musicians encouraged to bring their instruments and songs. At 6 p.m. there will be a pulled pork dinner.

The next day, Oct. 23 the church will have their annual hayride to the Caney Picnic Area. We will have a potluck meal following church and then leave on the hayride around 2 p.m. with services on the mountain at 4 p.m.Then on Sunday, Oct. 30 New Mansion will have a Hallelujah party, starting at 5 p.m. and a potluck supper at 6 p.m. For more information, call Jeff and Cindy Marsh at 796-2325 or Randy and Belinda Wyman at 785-4440.

News For the Week of October 10, 2011

The biggest news around Bradleyville is the bridge is finally open. It actually opened Oct. 4th around 7 pm, right on schedule. It got a lot of traffic that first night since there was a ballgame at Bradleyville and several had to go home that way. I suspect that even if some people didn’t have to go home that way they just went down and drove across the bridge because they could. We had to go get gas at Kissee Mills Jct. after the ballgame and so could have went home the shortcut way, through F Highway, but I asked Bob if we could go back around through Bradleyville just so we could drive across the bridge.  Someone has already dedicated the bridge with some new "burnout" marks. When we started across it there were 6 cars lining up to race, oh, to be young again...I heard maybe a couple of them weren't so "young", just young at heart!

I made a remark at my dad’s that I thought the new bridge was ugly, it just wasn’t made as pretty as the old one. Well, I stand corrected. Virginia Clayton was visiting Dad and Donna that day and she said she thought the bridge was beautiful, because she didn’t have to go around the detour anymore. I admit that she is right, the bridge is beautiful.

It was good to see Virgil and Lynda Neuenschwander at church Sunday night. They live in Oklahoma most of the year but re-locate to Bradleyville a couple of times a year to stay a month or so and visit with family and friends.

Our sympathy goes out to the family of Clint Smithson of Taneyville who passed away last week.

Eugene Maggard suffered a heart attack last week and underwent open-heart surgery to repair some blockage but the report is he is doing very well.

I am sorry but I misunderstood who was getting married last week. It was Jessica Adams instead of Jenny, who is already married. Congratulations to  both girls, Jessica and husband, and also to Jenny and her husband, since I obviously didn’t know she was married.

A reminder that Hercules Church will have their Homecoming on Saturday, October 15, starting at noon with a covered dish meal. Music and fellowship will continue after the meal. Everyone is welcome to join them and bring a song and/or instruments.

New Mansion Church will have a Fall Festival Saturday, Oct. 22, starting at 1 pm and going to around 6:00 in the evening. Games, food, a country store, hayrides to the pumpkin patch and singing. Everyone welcome to come, singers and musicians welcome.

There is a volleyball game on Thursday, Oct. 13 at Everton, and another game at Chadwick on Tuesday, Oct. 18. The Jr. High girls will have a game with Mark Twain on Monday, Oct. 17. The volleyball and Jr. High season will be over at the end of this month.

Bradleyville School will be having a flu shot clinic on Oct. 20 from 8:30-10:30 for adults only.  The school will also have an auction of various items on Oct. 15. Parent-teacher conferences will be held on Oct. 20-21. Also on Nov. 4 will be the FFA chili supper and auction, and all donations for the auction are welcome. You may call the school at 796-2288 to find out details on any of these activities if you are interested.

A special Happy Anniversary wish goes out to Thurman and Kay Whittaker who are celebrating their 50th anniversary on Oct. 14.

Birthdays: Oct. 13: Shea Dobbins; Oct. 14: Lucas Clemans; Oct. 15: Bob Case, Lisa Potter, Joe Rogers, Jennifer Smith; Oct. 16: Brynne Mitchell; Oct. 17: Shelby Bryne, Cassie Matthews; Oct. 18: Kelli Clemans, Tony Todd.

Anniversaries: Oct. 14: Jerry and Nardena Brown, Thurman and Kay Whittaker.
